Ari Herstand (Ari's Take)

Ari, I like your style and your music. I have 4 kids, 3 musicians... and I'm an artist with a focus on music. I have never explored marketing music but the kids are now grown and I figured I give CD Baby a try... that's where I ran into your blog and found it to be very well intended. Thank you...
Which led to a quick listening of your music which I am going to revisit since I like it too!
Mean while I do have a question for you... this is a confusing help message from CD Baby. What is the correct thing to do? If you join one of these do you now also have a publisher?

ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC are performing rights organizations, NOT publishing companies. If you do not have a publishing affiliation with ASCAP, BMI, or SESAC, please select "No" below.

ASCAP, BMI and SESAC are Performing Rights Organizations (PRO) (not publishers) they only collect one kind of "publishing" royalty. Publishing companies will collect ALL publishing royalties owed to you and own your songs (the songwriter). CD Baby Pro (their admin publishing company) will collect ALL publishing royalties owed to you (without owning your music). They're wondering if you're affiliated with a PRO. If not, you can select no and they will register you with one and then you will get royalties from the PRO along with all other royalties you're owed.
